"Christensen artwork displayed at Firehouse" (caption) Ann Christensen: "Bliss" Cambridge artist Ann Christensen will be featured in the art gallery at Newburyport's Firehouse Center in Market Square through Monday, Aug. 9. A reception, during which the public is invited to meet the artist, will be held Sunday, 1-4 p.m. The show, called "Spirit of Place," is a series of expressionistic landscape paintings of New England scenes. Christensen is known for her nontraditional use of color, and bold, aggressive brushstrokes. Taking risks with color is a key motivator, and a primary reason why Christensen enjoys photographing various hues of autumn while gathering material from which to paint. Form is more apparent during the colorful New England autumn, she says, but her renderings of those scenes generally do not mimic the colors found in nature. Christensen has studied art history at Harvard, MIT, Boston University and Northeastern University. She has studied painting at Harvard and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. A part time graphic designer, she spends much of her time painting at her studio in Allston. Her work has been shown extensively in the Boston/Cambridge area, as well as in galleries in Arizona and Stamford, Conn., where she won top honors in 1991. |
